It doesn't play well with
files being changed "under its nose" when the other app doesn't
support NSDocument.</p>
<p>For now, the official recommendation is "don't do that"</p>
<p>Things may change in the future.</p>

<p>I still recommend caution, but you can be a bit less vigilant...</p>
