Footnotes are incompatible with wordpress.com due to colons in href anchors

Wordpress.com sanitizes html in various (often broken) ways. One is that it disallows colons in href anchors.

It turns "#fn:1" into "1", so multimarkdown footnotes don't work. Could multimarkdown be changed to not put the colon in there?

Thanks!

This is the syntax used in PHP Markdown Extra, which I want to keep as much compatibility as possible with.

I don't plan on changing the standard output just to work around problems in Wordpress, but you can certainly modify the source to create your own version of MMD that leaves out the colon.
